Finding Joy in Jesus Through Life’s Suffering
How can Christians experience genuine joy while facing pain, disappointment, financial pressure, illness, rejection, or loss? In this encouraging sermon from Clayton First Assembly of God, we examine the Apostle Paul’s response to suffering in 2 Corinthians 6:3–10.
Paul’s life was not easy. He experienced affliction, imprisonment, physical exhaustion, sleepless nights, rejection, and opposition because of his commitment to Jesus Christ. Yet these hardships did not destroy his faith or silence his ministry. Instead, they became evidence that his devotion to the Gospel was genuine.
Faith That Endures Difficulties
The Corinthian believers questioned Paul’s motives and ministry. Paul answered by pointing to the way he continued serving God through tremendous adversity. He was not following Christ because it offered an easy or comfortable life. He remained faithful because he knew Jesus was worth every sacrifice.
His example reminds us that hardship does not necessarily mean God has abandoned us. Difficult seasons can reveal the strength of our faith and teach us to depend more completely on God’s grace.
Remove the Obstacles
Paul was also careful not to place unnecessary obstacles in anyone’s path. His goal was not personal recognition, comfort, or praise. He wanted people to see Jesus clearly through his words, choices, and conduct.
That challenge still applies to Christians today. Our lives should direct attention toward Christ rather than ourselves. God alone deserves the glory for every life changed, every prayer answered, and every opportunity to serve.
Sorrowful, Yet Always Rejoicing
“As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.”
2 Corinthians 6:10
Paul did not pretend that suffering was painless. He experienced real sorrow, but sorrow did not take away his joy in Christ. He may not have possessed earthly wealth, but he made others spiritually rich by sharing the Gospel.
The possessions of this world will eventually pass away. The love, peace, hope, and salvation found in Jesus will remain. Even when circumstances give us reasons to weep, we can still choose to praise God and trust His faithfulness.
Choose Joy in Christ
You may feel pressured, discouraged, or overwhelmed, but your story is not over. God is still working, and He can give you the strength to continue standing.
