Sunday Sermon | September 6, 2026
Can You Take God at His Word?
What do you do when the world feels increasingly uncertain, evil appears to prosper, and God seems silent? Do you give in to fear and frustration, or can you continue trusting that God will do exactly what He has promised?
In this encouraging sermon, Pastor Jeff Houston turns to Psalm 37:27-40 and challenges believers to take God at His Word. David’s message reminds us that God sees, God knows, God cares, and God is never absent. Even when His answer does not come according to our timetable, He continues working with perfect wisdom and perfect timing.
“Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”
Psalm 37:5
Trusting God When He Seems Silent
There are seasons when prayers seem unanswered, doors remain closed, and nothing appears to be changing. Psalm 37 calls us to resist the temptation to fret. Instead of becoming spiritually agitated by what we see, we are invited to commit our path to the Lord and rest in His faithfulness.
Numbers 23:19 reinforces this confidence: God does not lie, and He does not make empty promises. If God has spoken, He has the power and faithfulness to fulfill His Word. The answer may not arrive immediately, but silence does not mean that God has forgotten or abandoned us.
Five Ways to Live by God’s Promises
1. Depart From Evil and Do Good
Psalm 37:27 gives a direct command: turn away from evil and choose what is right. Believers are not called to answer hatred with hatred, bitterness with bitterness, or insults with more insults. Romans 12:17 and 1 Peter 3:9 remind us not to repay evil for evil, but to follow what is good and respond with blessing.
2. Speak With Wisdom and Truth
The words of a righteous person should reflect God’s perspective. Our speech, decisions, and responses to life’s challenges should line up with Scripture. Rather than repeating the fear and anger of the world, believers can speak words shaped by God’s truth and His will.
3. Keep God’s Word in Your Heart
Psalm 37:31 describes God’s law as being in the believer’s heart, providing stability so that his steps do not slip. When Scripture is treasured and practiced, it steadies us through temptation, uncertainty, and adversity. We remain grounded because we are standing on something stronger than our circumstances.
4. Rest in God’s Protection
God never promises that believers will avoid every problem. He does promise that they will never face those troubles alone. Psalm 37 assures us that the Lord will not abandon His people. Others may scheme, accuse, or attempt to cause harm, but God retains the final word. We can rest because our lives remain in His hands.
5. Wait on the Lord and Remain Faithful
Waiting on God is not passive resignation. It means maintaining hope, keeping our eyes on Him, and continuing to live faithfully while trusting His timing. The apparent success of wickedness is temporary, but the inheritance God promises His people is eternal.
God Has the Final Say
Psalm 37 contrasts the temporary power of the wicked with the lasting peace of those who trust the Lord. What looks powerful today can disappear tomorrow, but God’s salvation, strength, and promises endure forever. Our security is not found in money, influence, government, or human strength. It is found in God alone.
Pastor Jeff closes with a call to place every burden in God’s hands. If you are facing a battle, struggling to understand God’s timing, or feeling shaken by the condition of the world, keep your focus on Jesus. Continue praying, continue believing, and continue standing on His Word. God has brought His people through before, and He remains faithful today.
