The Lord Is My Help—Strength and Security in Psalm 121: August 5, 2026
Where do you turn when you need help? When life feels uncertain, resources begin to disappear, or circumstances seem beyond your control, Psalm 121 reminds us that our help comes from the Lord.
In this encouraging sermon from Clayton First Assembly of God, Pastor Jeff Houston examines the promises found throughout Psalm 121 and explains why believers can trust God as their source, stability, security, shade, and salvation.
“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.”
Psalm 121:1–2
God Is Our Source
When David looked toward the hills, he knew his help did not come from the mountains, idols, or anything created by human hands. His help came from the One who created the mountains, the heavens, and the earth.
Money, possessions, institutions, and other earthly resources can eventually run out. The sermon recalls how God directed Elijah to a brook during a famine. The brook eventually dried up, but God did not. When one resource ended, the Lord continued providing and showed Elijah where to go next.
Our confidence should not rest in the resource. It should remain firmly placed in the God who provides it.
God Is Our Stability
Psalm 121 promises that God will not allow our feet to be moved. When the path becomes steep, uncertain, or slippery, He provides the stability we need to continue walking.
This does not mean Christians will never experience difficulties. God may not remove every storm, river, fire, or trial from our path. Instead, He promises to remain with us as we pass through them.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were not kept out of the fiery furnace, but they were not alone inside it. A fourth figure appeared with them in the fire, and they came through without being consumed. The only things the flames destroyed were the ropes that had bound them.
In the same way, God can use difficult seasons to break the things that bind us while strengthening our trust in Him.
God Is Our Security
“Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.”
Psalm 121:4
God never becomes distracted, tired, or unaware of what His children are facing. He does not sleep, and He never takes His eyes off us.
That truth gives believers peace. We can rest because God remains awake. We can trust Him because He knows where we are, what we need, and what lies ahead. He has already traveled the path before us and understands every danger along the way.
God Is Our Shade
Psalm 121 also describes the Lord as the shade at our right hand. This picture of shade represents His covering, comfort, and protection.
Like a mother bird gathering her young beneath her wings, God invites us to seek refuge in Him. Psalm 91 teaches that His faithfulness becomes our shield. When we remain close to Him, we can find protection and peace beneath the shadow of the Almighty.
God Is Our Salvation
The closing verses of Psalm 121 promise that the Lord will preserve His people from evil and watch over their coming and going. His care is not temporary. It reaches from this present moment into eternity.
Are you depending on temporary resources, or are you trusting the God who never runs out? Are you struggling to remain steady in a difficult season? The Lord remains your source, stability, security, shade, and salvation.
